UMKC Wireless Network Pocket PC Configuration

In order to enable secure wireless on a Pocket PC, please follow these steps.  Note that the first steps may need to be done at home, depending on what you use to setup your Pocket PC.  Also note that each Pocket PC has a different set of utilities for wireless setup, so these steps may need to be adjusted for your particular device.

1. Connect your Pocket PC device to a Windows computer with Active Sync or Windows Mobile Device Center.  If you cannot do this, you can temporarily connect to the un-encrypted wireless network at UMKC, and logon through Internet Explorer in order to get through this portion of the setup.  Make sure you remove the un-encrypted wireless settings afterwards if you use this method for initial setup, or your device will always use the un-encrypted network instead.

2. Click on Start, and go to the 'Programs' group on your Pocket PC, and look for a certificate enrollment utility similar to the one selected below.  Note that the certificate enrollment utility may be a menu option in your WiFi utilities on your Pocket PC instead of a separate program.

3. Open the certificate enrollment utility, and you should get a screen similar to the following:

4. Fill in your UMKC username and password on the User Name and Password boxes.  For the Server box, put in:  kc-iscs-ca1.kc.umkc.edu  , as shown above.  Then click on 'Retrieve Certificate'.

5.  You should then receive a second logon prompt.  Enter your UMKC username and password as prompted, and on the 'Domain' line enter  umkc-users  as shown above.  Then click on OK .

6. You should then get a report back similar to the above, indicating that your certificate was added successfully.

7. Next bring your Pocket PC on campus if it is not already, and turn on the WiFi radio if it is turned off.

8. Click on 'Start' and go to the 'Settings' .  The select the 'Connections' tab as shown below.

9. Click on the 'Network Cards' icon which will open a window similar to the following:

10. Click on the 'UMKCWPA' line, which will open a window similar to the following:

11. Click on the 'Network Key' tab, which will show a window similar to the following:

12. Set the 'Authentication' line to WPA and the 'Data Encryption' line to TKIP.  If you have an option on the 'Authentication' line for WPA2 , use that setting instead, and set the 'Data Encryption' line to 'AES'.  If neither WPA or WPA2 is available, you can also set 'Authentication' to 'Open' and 'Data Encryption' to WEP.

13.  Next click on the '802.1x' tab which will result in the following screen:

14. Set the 'EAP type' to 'Smart Card or Certificate' as show above, then click on the 'Properties' button.

15. You should see a certificate that we obtained earlier.  Click on this certificate, and click OK.

16. Click OK a second time.  You should then get a screen similar to the following:

17. Soon after getting the above screen, you should be prompted to enter a username and domain.  Enter your UMKC username as the username, and for the domain enter:  umkc-users  .

18. You should now be connected to the UMKC wireless network.
